Statewide snowpack measures 160% of average as winter storms pound California

After two of California's driest years on record, a stormy December has given a major boost to the state's water supplies.

Officials from the Department of Water Resources announced Thursday that automated stations throughout the Sierra Nevada have recorded snowpack that is 160% of average for this time of year.

Snowpack measurements are necessary to forecast how much snowmelt runoff will fill the state's reservoirs in the coming months.
