UC strike over pro-Palestinian protests expands to Irvine, San Diego, Santa Barbara next

The UC union representing 48,000 graduate teaching assistants, researchers and other academic workers said that it would expand its ongoing strike next week by calling on thousands of workers at UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine to walk off the job, a major escalation of labor tensions that would involve six of the system's 10 campuses.

The decision by leaders of United Auto Workers Local 4811 comes as the union and University of California are battling before a state labor board over the legality of the strike — and are awaiting a ruling on the issue.

MCC's 20th Anniversary Partners
for Prosperity Tribute Dinner

On May 6, world leaders gathered at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas, to mark MCC's 20th anniversary and the agency's exceptional impact across the globe.

The event concluded with President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera joining MCC CEO Alice Albright in celebrating the launch of the $350 million Malawi Transport and Land Compact. The compact aims to reduce transport costs, connect farmers to markets, and strengthen the country's land administration.

2024 U.S.- Africa Business Summit

During the 16th U.S.-Africa Business Summit in Dallas, Texas, MCC engaged with African governments and the private sector about trade, investment, and business opportunities in an effort to build stronger economic and commercial ties with Africa. MCC also participated in various events showcasing the agency's investment of over $10 billion in policy reforms and infrastructure across the continent over the past two decades.

Delivering Economic Freedom

On May 3, MCC CEO Alice Albright joined Congressman Joaquin Castro for a panel discussion hosted by the World Affairs Council of San Antonio and the University of the Incarnate Word Lewis Center. The event focused on MCC's efforts to support nations committed to democratic governance and economic freedom.

Strengthening U.S. Competitiveness

On May 15, MCC CEO Albright, CEO of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation Scott Nathan, and President and Chair of the Export-Import Bank of the United States Reta Jo Lewis, defended President Biden's fiscal year 2025 budget requests for their agencies before the Senate Appropriation Committee's State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee.

On May 23, MCC CEO Alice Albright and His Excellency President William Ruto launched the Kenya Urban Mobility and Growth Threshold Program.

The program seeks to assist Kenya in addressing limited connectivity in urban areas, and issue identified as a critical constraint to economic growth in the country.

CEO Alice Albright travelled to Malawi and Zambia in late May to celebrate progress on poverty-reducing partnerships with both countries.
