DEATH RACE ALERT: Dogs chained, shivering in the cold

No One Should Suffer as Birch Has

Dear Aaaaaaa,

Birch was only a puppy when she sustained a debilitating, painful spinal cord injury at a kennel owned by a former Iditarod champion. Instead of providing her with veterinary care, her owner left her chained outside to drag herself through ice and snow. He apparently feared that anyone who saw her would conclude that the mushers were “being real hard” on her—so she was left struggling to pull herself in and out of the wooden box that served as her only escape from the bone-chilling Arctic wind.

In just a few days, hundreds of dogs will be driven to the point of exhaustion, illness, injury, or even death in the Iditarod—a race so deadly that its own official rules call dog deaths an “Unpreventable Hazard.” We’re determined to make this year’s dangerous race the last, and we need your support.

Whether or not a dog survives to make it across the finish line, every one of them will endure tremendous suffering at the hands of mushers and kennel workers.

Many like Birch go without veterinary care for even the most severe wounds or injuries, they’re denied the water and rest that they need, and they’re given only rotten or moldy food to sustain them through the lonely, dangerously cold nights and torturous “training” sessions. Almost none will ever know the love and respect that every dog deserves.
