Aggressive 'active shooter' tactics face scrutiny after LAPD kills girl at Burlington store

Los Angeles officers' response during last week's fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl inside a Burlington store remains under review. So far, their tactic appears to have come straight out of a playbook that for more than two decades - since Columbine - has guided police response to "active shooter" situations: Stop the shooter immediately, by killing them or arresting them. But that approach can have terrible consequences, especially if it's unclear whether a suspect is armed. Last week's tragedy has sparked outrage and debate over how police should respond to such situations.
