A PETA investigator offered to take her to a veterinarian, but the mushers who owned the kennel simply refused. They instead left her chained outside to drag herself through the snow. When not racing, she was still left outdoors around the clock at the same kennel as Birch alongside dozens of dogs whom musher John Baker condemned to a life of loneliness and neglect. When our investigator met Snickers, she walked with a painful limp from chronic arthritis—and until that brave, kindhearted investigator built a doghouse for her, she had no shelter at all from the howling wind and subzero temperatures. Each year, dogs like Birch and Snickers suffer from extreme exhaustion, illness, and injuries during the deadly Iditarod. And without our help, the victims of the dog-sled industry will likely never receive the care and comfort that they deserve.
