Gun violence hits 15-year high in L.A., taking lives and erasing hard-fought gains

As of Dec. 29, there have been 392 homicides in Los Angeles in 2021 - the most of any year since 2007. Young Latino and Black men continue to be overrepresented among the dead. An analysis by The Times shows sharp increases in neighborhoods such as Watts and adjoining Florence-Firestone, as well as cities such as Compton and Long Beach. But behind the numbers are the stories of lives shattered by violence.
