A lengthy and live-televised firefight between LAPD officers and two heavily armed bank robbers in 1997 in a bustling North Hollywood shopping district helped usher in the modern era of militarized police.

Last week, another shocking encounter just three blocks away in which an officer fatally shot a 14-year-old girl and an assault suspect offered a tragic postscript to the high-powered approach that police adopted after the bank shootout and raises questions on why an officer would discharge an assault-style rifle inside a store.
