MCC Selects Belize and Zambia for Grant Assistance

The Millennium Challenge Corporation's (MCC) Board of Directors held its quarterly meeting on December 14 and selected Belize and Zambia as newly eligible to develop MCC compacts—the agency's five-year grant program.

"I am excited to announce MCC's new partnerships with Belize and Zambia," said MCC's Acting Chief Executive Officer Mahmoud Bah. "These governments have demonstrated a clear commitment to democratic governance, investing in people, and pursuing economic freedom. We look forward to working together to develop programs that reduce poverty and enable sustainable and inclusive economic growth."

The U.S. Senate voted unanimously early Saturday morning to confirm MCC Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Alexia Latortue, as Assistant Secretary for International Markets at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

"Alexia has been an invaluable partner and tireless team leader," said Mahmoud Bah, MCC's Acting CEO. "
It has been an absolute pleasure to partner with someone who believes so deeply in MCC's mission and is such a strong champion of our model."

On December 13, Acting CEO Bah and Deputy CEO Latortue met with Africa50 CEO Alain EbobissΓ© to sign an MOU that initiates a new phase in the launch of the Millennium Impact for Infrastructure Accelerator Africa (MIIA-Africa).

MIIA-Africa is one of MCC's innovative finance tools to mobilize private capital to maximize the impact of highly developmental projects that spur sustainable and inclusive economic growth and reduce poverty.

Since the agency's founding in 2004, MCC has committed to producing results and ensuring that the American people are getting a good return on their investment.

International development professionals can now quickly find evidence to inform their projects thanks to MCC's new Sector Results and Learning pages.

The pages are user-friendly, interactive webpages designed to share MCC-generated evidence and inform program design across the international development community.
On December 4, The Gambia held its first elections since the fall of the dictatorial regime of Yahya Jammeh in December 2016.

Considered decisive but peaceful, it resulted in the victory of incumbent President Adama Barrow with 53.2 percent of the votes.

MCC and the Guatemalan government celebrated the successful completion of a five-year, $28 million threshold program on November 30 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The program helped advance economic growth in the country by strengthening secondary education and boosting the country's ability to deter and detect tax evasion.

MCC's Vice President of the Department of Policy and Evaluation, Alicia Philips Mandaville, traveled to Guatemala to participate in the program closeout event.

It was another busy year for MCC as the agency selected new partner countries, signed new agreements, successfully closed out several programs, announced a new priority on climate, and launched new results and learning pages.

From the closeout of the MCC - Liberia Compact to the signing of The Gambia Threshold Program, MCC has published a year in review page to take stock of everything the agency and its partners accomplished in 2021 in sectors ranging from energy and power to education.
