WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
UNHCR calls for decisive action to end statelessness. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi today appealed for “decisive action” from governments to end statelessness, saying it is the right thing to do, “humanly, ethically and politically”. Grandi’s appeal comes four years after the launch of a 10-year campaign to eliminate statelessness globally, in recognition of the fact that millions remain stateless and live in limbo around the world, with the majority in Asia and Africa. Last month, a stateless activist received Brazilian citizenship at an emotional ceremony in Geneva.
Ebola outbreak spirals in Democratic Republic of Congo. The latest escalation of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo is exacerbating what health officials warn may become the worst Ebola outbreak in the country's history. Over 200 people have reportedly died from the disease since August. The first cases of the country’s latest outbreak were found in North Kivu, which faces an already dire humanitarian situation, with more than a million people displaced. This is the highest concentration of internally displaced people in the DRC and it is estimated that half a million people have been forced from their homes this year alone.
WHAT’S ON OUR RADAR
Ilhan Omar's journey from Somali refugee to US Congress. Ilhan Omar, who fled war in Somalia with her family in 1991 and was elected to the US Congress last week, has said she hopes her victory will give hope to those with similar childhoods. Omar spent four years in a Somali refugee camp in Kenya, before arriving in the US at age 12 with her siblings under a resettlement programme.
Refugees fleeing conflict delighted by first snow in Canada. A video of an Eritrean refugee brother and sister experiencing their first snowfall in Canada has gone viral after being Tweeted by Toronto resident Rebecca Davies, who is hosting the two children and their family until they find permanent housing. Canada is one of the few countries where residents are able to pool money and resources to help resettle and support refugees.
Syrian refugee children enjoy a new start at school. Thousands of Syrians who have missed out on years of vital learning are being helped back into education in Lebanon and Jordan. Photographer Andy Hall captures their joy as they attend their first classes. A recent report by UNHCR found that four million refugee children around the world are still out of school.

A new documentary tracks Somalian model Kafia Mahdi's path from child refugee to fashion star. "I hope it will help other refugees by showing them they are capable of doing anything," she says.
DID YOU KNOW?
In 2017, approximately 70 countries reported 3.9 million stateless individuals. However, UNHCR estimates that this is only a fraction of the total – the true number could be as much as three times higher.
