The release details full-time equivalent (FTE) employment numbers for U.S. scheduled service passenger airlines. Last month, BTS reported that U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 2.6 percent more workers in August 2018 than in August 2017. August's 439,615 full-time equivalents (FTE), was the second highest monthly employment total since November 2004 (439,776 FTEs), down 0.9 percent from the highest monthly total in July 2018 (443,475) and was the 58th consecutive month that U.S. scheduled passenger airline FTEs exceeded the same month of the previous year.
The release summarizes the value of freight transported in September by truck, rail and other modes between the U.S. and Canada and the U.S. and Mexico with the top states, ports and commodities. Last month, BTS reported that the top two modes in August for those freight movements were truck and rail. Trucks moved freight valued at $66.6 billion, up 5.7 percent compared to August 2017. Rail moved freight valued at $15.5 billion, up 5.5 percent during the same period.
This releases consists on U.S. airline domestic monthly on-time performance, cancellations, tarmac data, mishandled baggage reports and overbookings released in coordination with the Department of Transportation's release of the November Air Travel Consumer Report. From the previous month's release, in August 2018, marketing carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 75.2 percent, down from the 76.0 percent on-time rate in July 2018. The marketing carriers include branded code-share partners of mainline carriers. Also in August 2018, reporting carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 75.6 percent, down from the 75.9 percent on-time rate in July 2018 and down from 77.1 percent in August 2017. BTS Previously
BTS has released the following:
Nov. 6 U.S. airlines September fuel cost was $2.24 per gallon, up 4 cents from August ($2.20) and up 46 cents from September 2017 ($1.78). Industry summary of airline fuel consumption, total fuel cost and price paid per gallon are available on the database. Individual airline numbers through June are available on the BTS website.
Nov. 8 U.S. airlines September employment (722,880 total full-time and part-time)), up 0.5pct from August and up 3.3pct from September 2017 (passenger+cargo). Monthly full-time and part-time employment statistics are reported by U.S. airlines that operate at least one aircraft that has more than 60 seats or the capacity to carry a payload of passengers, cargo and fuel weighing more than 18,000 pounds.
Nov. 15 The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, fell 0.3 percent in September from August, falling after a one-month increase. The index rose 4.7 percent from September 2017. The September Freight TSI was the fifth highest index level on record but was 0.9 percent below the all-time high level in June 2018
Nov. 15 U.S. airlines carried an estimated 75.3 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers, seasonally-adjusted, in October 2018, up 0.1 percent from the September estimate. The air traffic estimate released is a statistical estimate based on U.S. airlines reported data through August. In unadjusted reported data for August, systemwide, domestic and international enplanements all reached all-time highs for any month.
