The Bureau of Transportation Statistics will release the following data sets in the next two weeks:

 

  • Airline Fuel Cost and Consumption, September 2018
Tuesday, Nov. 6 - 11:00am ET
BTS Airline Fuel Cost and Consumption database to be updated with September data. Last month, US airlines August fuel cost was $2.20 per gallon, unchanged cent from July ($2.20) and up 57 cents from August 2017 ($1.63). Industry summary of airline fuel consumption, total fuel cost and price paid per gallon are available on the database. Individual airline numbers through June are available on the BTS website.

 

  • Airline Industry Full-Time/Part-Time Employment, September 2018
Thursday, Nov. 8 - 11:00am ET
BTS Airline Employment database to be updated with September data. Last month, U.S. airlines August employment (719,623 total full-time and part-time)) was down 0.4 percent from July and up 2.9 percent from August 2017. Monthly full-time and part-time employment statistics reported by U.S. airlines that operate at least one aircraft that has more than 60 seats or the capacity to carry a payload of passengers, cargo and fuel weighing more than 18,000 pounds. Includes passenger and cargo airlines.

 

  • Transportation Services Index (TSI), September 2018
Thursday, Nov. 15 - 11:30am ET
The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in for-hire freight shipments by mode of transportation. The Passenger TSI measures the month-to-month changes in travel that involves the services of the for-hire passenger transportation sector. In the previous release for August, BTS reported that the Freight TSI rose 0.1 percent in August from July, rising after a one-month decline. The August Freight TSI was the third highest index level on record but was 0.7 percent below the all-time high level in June 2018.

  • Airline Traffic Data, October 2018 estimate, August 2018 reported
Friday, Nov. 16 - 11:00am ET
BTS estimates air traffic data for September and October based on reported data through August. Estimates are for U.S. airlines monthly passengers, revenue passenger-miles, available seat-miles and load factor for systemwide, domestic and international. Numbers are seasonally-adjusted and unadjusted. In the previous release, U.S. airlines were estimated to have carried 75.8 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers. The 75.8 million passengers in September would be a seasonally-adjusted all-time high and the eighth consecutive monthly increase. July unadjusted reported systemwide, domestic and international enplanements all reached all-time highs for any month.

  • North American Freight Data, August 2018
Oct. 24
BTS reported that truck was the most used mode for shipping freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in August 2018:
  • Most-used mode: Truck moved $66.6 billion of freight, up 5.7 percent compared to August 2017 
  • Second mode: Rail moved $15.5 billion of freight, up 5.5 percent compared to August 2017

  • Safety Data Challenge Semi-Finalists

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the five semi-finalists who are advancing to the next stage of its Solving for Safety Visualization Challenge.  The challenge, announced on June 14, seeks innovative analytical visualization tools that can improve safety on the nation's road and rail systems. 

 

  • Air Travel Consumer Report: August 2018 Numbers
Oct. 29
The marketing carriers reported an on-time rate of 75.2 percent in August and a cancellation rate of 2.0 percent. The reporting carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 75.6 percent, down from the 75.9 percent on-time rate in July 2018 and down from 77.1 percent in August 2017. Reporting carriers canceled 1.9 percent of their scheduled domestic flights, a higher rate than 1.7 percent in July 2018 but down from 2.2 percent in August 2017.
