Tripoli violence threatens civilians and the displaced

In light of ongoing clashes in Libya’s capital, UNHCR has called on all parties to spare civilians and civilian infrastructure and allow safe passage for those seeking refuge in safer areas. Recent shelling of civilian neighbourhoods has caused death, destruction and displacement. Two people were killed and several others injured, including children, at the Fallah 2 Tawergha settlement, which hosts more than 900 displaced Libyans. Refugee representatives meet South Sudan peace talk parties. Sixteen South Sudanese refugee representatives have met with the parties involved in key peace negotiations in Khartoum. The refugees, who flew in from Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Sudan, shared their views and urge participants to find peace for the millions of South Sudanese whose lives have been uprooted by the conflict. According to UNHCR, this dialogue will help ensure that refugee voices continue to play a pivotal role in the revitalized peace effort to end the country’s devastating civil war. WHAT’S ON OUR RADAR Cyprus police intercept boat carrying 36 Syrian refugees. Cypriot marine police say they escorted 36 Syrian refugees ashore on Monday, including 14 children. Authorities have raised concerns about increasing numbers of people arriving by boat to the island. Charity: Britain's support of refugees faces ‘a turning point’. The chief executive of the charity Refugee Action, Stephen Hale, argues that while the vast majority of British people want their government to do the right thing and help refugees, “the sad truth is the UK frequently fails them”. Aunt of Alan Kurdi calls for Western countries to speed up refugee intake. On the third anniversary of Alan Kurdi’s death, his aunt has told the Telegraph she wants to see the UK and other Western countries take more responsibility for the millions of Syrians who have fled conflict at home. Across Libya, more than 184,000 internally displaced people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance, along with a further 368,000 people who have returned to their former homes.
