Help your Students "Ooch" This Summer

School is wrapping up and summertime has quickly arrived! The summer months are a perfect time for your daughters or sons to "ooch," a term used in the book, Decisive, which the authors believe was used in parts of the South and is derived from a blend of "inch" and "scoot."  The authors state that "to ooch" is to conduct small experiments to test one's hypothesis.  The Cawley Career Education Center speaks to students about testing their interests all the time.  A large percentage of Georgetown students secure internships during the summer to get a more in-depth look at a career, as your son or daughter may have done this summer, which is certainly one way to ooch.

If your daughter or son has not secured an internship this summer, what else can they do to test their interests?  First, volunteer experiences can be just as enriching and resume building as an internship.  Idealist.org is a fantastic site to find internships.  And while the internship board is a great starting point, we suggest researching organizations in the area on idealist to identify organizations that speak to their own personal mission and curiosities.  Call the organization of interest and ask if they need volunteers!  Another way to test interests is to shadow or speak to a professional in the field.  There are a number of ways to find professionals in the field, including through your own personal network as parents.  Another easy method to find professions is with the Hoya Gateway platform, where 1,600+ alumni have signed up to help a student. Be sure your daughter or son preps for this shadow experience or conversation.  They can click here to learn more about how to reach out and questions to ask.

There are many other creative ways to spend time "ooching" this summer, and we are happy to brainstorm other ideas if your daughter or son is lost.  Hopefully, these two concrete examples will help get them started.
