Jerry's eyes were so infected that he couldn't see. Peter was so malnourished that he was too weak to stand.

Dear Aaaaaaa,

When a PETA eyewitness found these two young calves languishing in their own waste on a hideous Pennsylvania dairy factory farm, Jerry couldn't see and Peter couldn't even stand.

They were both infested with lice. They had pinkeye and ringworm, and Peter suffered from a case of bacterial pneumonia that made his "moo" sound like a desperate, gurgled moan.

The farm where Jerry and Peter were found was nothing short of hellish:

  • Cows were forced to live ankle-deep in their own waste.
  • A mother cow was left in a stall with the bloody body of her dead calf.
  • Many calves went blind from painful pinkeye infections.
  • Dying cows were denied food, water, shelter, and/or veterinary treatment.

This isn't an aberration—investigators have found similar types of cruelty throughout the dairy industry. In order to make milking easier, many farms—including this one—engage in "tail-docking": amputating cows' tails by tightly binding them with elastic bands, causing the skin and tissue to die slowly and slough off. Not only is it completely unnecessary and terribly painful for cows, it also leads to the spread of disease and is condemned by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

With the help of our committed members, PETA is doing all that we can to prevent more cows from suffering the way Peter and Jerry did. We're pushing back against dangerous "ag-gag" laws that attempt to make investigations like this one in Pennsylvania illegal. We're exposing the suffering that the meat, egg, and dairy industries don't want consumers to see and engaging the public in our campaigns for change. We're helping millions of people discover how easy it can be to eat healthy, humane vegan foods, reducing demand for animal "products" and building a better world for cows and all other living beings.

No one who saw Peter and Jerry in the state that we found them in would have ever considered these helpless calves "lucky"—but their story was about to take a turn for the better. Keep an eye on your inbox for the conclusion!
