For a distressed dog confined to a lonely backyard without adequate shelter, every day can be a challenge just to survive.
PETA fieldworkers spot them every winter, shaking and soaked head to tail by freezing rain or frantically shifting from paw to paw to keep them off the frozen ground, their bodies hunched against the biting cold.
The worst of winter will soon be upon us, and frigid nights can result in agonizing frostbite—and even death—for a dog with no way to escape from the cold. That’s why today, our fieldworkers and volunteers are delivering custom-built PETA doghouses and straw bedding to cold “backyard dogs” who often have little more protection than a rusting barrel or a scrap of wood leaning against a fence.
When our fieldworkers hear of dogs living on a muddy patch of dirt or confined to an outdoor pen, they do all that they can to see that the animals are taken inside. But if an owner refuses to act—or local officials are unable or unwilling to help—we do everything possible to ensure the dog’s survival. PETA has delivered more than 8,500 sturdy doghouses since this life-changing program began, giving thousands of dogs a chance to escape the deadly winter chill.

We’ve set a deadline of December 31 to raise $200,000 to provide shelter, food, and other essentials for neglected dogs. Gifts made after that date or after our goal has been met won’t be matched, but they’ll still make a tremendous difference to our work for dogs in need.
