UNHCR and UNDP urge improved conditions in Myanmar’s Rakhine State

UNHCR and UNDP urge improved conditions in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Two months after a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding was signed by UNHCR, UNDP and the Government of Myanmar, the two UN agencies are urging Myanmar authorities to make tangible progress to improve conditions in Rakhine State. In a joint press release issued Wednesday, UNHCR and UNDP said the government’s willingness to take the lead in implementing the agreement is critical to creating conditions conducive for the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees.
Over 2,000 Somali refugees return home from Yemen. A boat carrying 116 Somali refugees, including students and a critically ill patient, arrived in Somalia yesterday from Yemen. It is the latest assisted spontaneous return facilitated by UNHCR, IOM and authorities in Yemen and Somalia. Since the programme started last year, over 2,000 refugees have chosen returned to Somalia from Yemen.

Amnesty calls on Europe to take action to prevent deaths at sea. A new report from Amnesty International is calling on the EU to do more to prevent the loss of life for refugees and migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Amongst a number of recommendations, it calls for regional disembarkation arrangements, a mandatory distribution mechanism for asylum-seekers in Europe and efforts to revisit the dynamics of the relationship with Libya. On Friday, UNHCR sounded the alarm on the tragedy of the Mediterranean Sea as the number of people dead or missing at sea in 2018 passed the 1,500 mark.

In March, the UN launched the Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis, seeking US$951 million in 2018 to assist more than 880,000 refugees and over 330,000 Bangladeshis in communities affected by the crisis. To date, the appeal is only 32 per cent funded.
