WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Thailand grants citizenship to boys rescued from cave. UNHCR has welcomed a decision by Thailand to grant citizenship to three boys and their soccer coach who were among a group of 13 rescued from a flooded cave last month. The rescue highlighted the plight of “stateless” people, who are often denied rights and opportunities because they are not recognized as citizens. Despite challenges, Thailand has been a regional leader in taking action to end statelessness. Some 100,000 people have been granted Thai citizenship since 2008.
US to give Colombia US$9m to help Venezuelans. The US has announced that it will give Colombia US$9 million to help provide for the hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans who have left their homeland because of widespread food and medicine shortages, skyrocketing inflation, political unrest and violence. The US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, says the funds, beyond some US$60 million already committed, will go toward water sanitation, health needs, sterilization and medicines.
WHAT’S ON OUR RADAR
Bosnians who once fled to safety offer support to refugees arriving in Balkans. Former Bosnian refugees are calling on leaders and their home country to show humanity toward the displaced people from Syria and other countries seeking refuge there.
Reports of forced return of Zimbabwean asylum-seeker cause concern. UNHCR is gravely concerned about reports that a senior Zimbabwean politician has been refused asylum in Zambia and sent back to his own country, in what would be a serious violation of international law. Tendai Biti, a leading figure in the MDC Alliance opposition party, fled post-election violence in Zimbabwe.
How robots are throwing Syrian refugees a lifeline. A grassroots education initiative in Lebanon, which teaches classes on robotics, computer science and artificial intelligence, is giving renewed dignity and hope to young Syrians uprooted by war.
Illustrations auctioned to help child refugees. Author Nicola Davies is planning to auction artwork by illustrators as part of her #3000Chairs campaign, which raises money to help child refugees. Davies launched the campaign in 2016, alongside writing a book about an orphaned child who has to flee war.
