WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Brazil reopens border to Venezuelans. A move by Brazil’s Supreme Court allowing Venezuelans to resume entering the border state of Roraima has been welcomed by UNHCR. Since 2015, over 32,000 Venezuelans have sought refugee status in Brazil, according to government figures, amid challenging political and socio-economic conditions at home. However, with numbers growing, public services are becoming stretched and the border was temporarily closed to Venezuelans before reopening Tuesday.
Why access to energy can empower refugees. The Royal Institute of International Affairs has made the case for why providing universal energy access to refugees is so crucial to improving their livelihoods and that of their host communities. Solutions, the writers suggest, including the Global Compact on Refugees, are emerging and there is “a lot of positive political momentum at the moment” in the global drive for better energy access.
WHAT’S ON OUR RADAR
The details of life in a refugee camp. Since civil war broke out in South Sudan in 2013, over a million South Sudanese refugees have crossed the border into neighbouring Uganda. Tommy Trenchard's photographs highlight day-to-day life in several refugee camps near the border.
How young Rohingya are overcoming trauma. In the crowded refugee settlements of Bangladesh, special child-friendly spaces are offering Rohingya children counselling and life skills training. Many of them witnessed brutality and violence back in Myanmar.
Refugees in Indonesia learn to beat doom and gloom. A refugee-run learning centre in Jakarta, Indonesia, is generating optimism and hope by offering students from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Ethiopia and beyond the chance to take classes in English, maths, science and art.
