Bureau of Transportation Statistics Upcoming Releases

August 13-24

 

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics will release the following data sets in the next two weeks:

 

  • Airline Traffic Data, May 2018
Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018 - 11:00am ET
U.S. airlines monthly passengers, revenue passenger-miles, available seat-miles and load factor for systemwide, domestic and international. Numbers are seasonally-adjusted and unadjusted. In the previous release for April, U.S. airlines carried a new seasonally-adjusted high of 73.8 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers, up 0.9 percent from March for the third consecutive monthly increase.

  • Passenger Airline Employment, June 2018
Monday, Aug. 20, 2018 - 11:00am ET
The release details full-time equivalent (FTE) employment numbers for U.S. scheduled service passenger airlines. Last month, BTS reported that U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 3.0 percent more workers in May 2018 than in May 2017. May was the highest monthly full-time equivalent (FTE) employment total (438,215 FTEs) since November 2004 (439,776 FTEs) and was the 55th consecutive month that U.S. scheduled passenger airline FTEs exceeded the same month of the previous year.

  • North American Freight Data, June 2018
Wednesday, July 25, 2018 - 11:00am ET
The release summarizes the value of freight transported in June by truck, rail and other modes between the U.S. and Canada and the U.S. and Mexico with the top states, ports and commodities. Last month, BTS reported that the top two modes in May for those freight movements were truck and rail. Trucks moved freight valued at $67.9 billion, up 8.9 percent compared to May 2017. Rail moved freight valued at $15.3 billion, up 0.7 percent during the same period.

  • Airline Fuel Cost and Consumption, June 2018
Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018
US airlines June fuel cost was $2.21 per gallon, up 2 cents from May ($2.19) and up 67 cents from June 2017 ($1.54). Industry summary of airline fuel consumption, total fuel cost and price paid per gallon are available on the database. Individual airline numbers through March are available on the BTS website.

 

  • Transportation Services Index (TSI), June 2018
Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018
The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), which is based on the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry, rose 0.4 percent in June from May, rising for the second consecutive month to reaching a new all-time high. The index rose 8.2 percent from June 2017. The June 2018 index level was 44.0 percent above the April 2009 low during the most recent recession.

  • Airline Full-Time/Part-Time Employment, June 2018
Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018
U.S. airlines June employment (715,963 total full-time and part-time)), up 0.2pct from May, up 2.4pct from June 2017 (passenger+cargo). Monthly full-time and part-time employment statistics are reported by U.S. airlines that operate at least one aircraft that has more than 60 seats or the capacity to carry a payload of passengers, cargo and fuel weighing more than 18,000 pounds.
