WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
South Sudan government and rebels sign peace deal. South Sudan's government has signed a ceasefire and power-sharing agreement with the country's main rebel group. The deal will see rebel leader Riek Machar return to power as one of five vice-presidents. It is part of efforts to end five years of civil war, in which tens of thousands have died and millions have been displaced.
Almost 400 people rescued off Spain this weekend. Spanish rescue services say nearly 400 asylum-seekers and migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean this weekend as they attempted to make the crossing from Morocco to Spain. Spain has witnessed an increase in sea arrivals, particularly during the summer months. On Friday, UNHCR raised the alarm about the need to increase search and rescue capacities, as the number of people dying or going missing on the Mediterranean Sea passed the 1,500 mark.
WHAT’S ON OUR RADAR
French city welcomes 42 Aquarius refugees. The city of Lille in northern France has welcomed 42 Sudanese refugees who were rescued by the Aquarius humanitarian boat. France agreed to take in 78 of the 630 people on board the ship, which was eventually permitted to disembark in Spain after being stranded at sea for more than a week in June.
UK charities: Refugees forced into destitution by lack of information. A coalition of charities headed by Refugee Action say thousands of refugees are being wrongly refused protection or support because they are ill-informed about how to apply for asylum in the UK.
HRW: Rohingya must be moved to safer areas in Cox's Bazar. A new report by Human Rights Watch says Rohingya refugees living in severely overcrowded conditions should be relocated to safer areas. The report says they face flooding and landslides during monsoon season, as well as disease, fires, community tensions, and domestic and sexual violence. Since the first heavy ruins in June, UNHCR and partners, in support of the Bangladeshi authorities, have been working around the clock to try to mitigate risks of landslides and flooding, with relocations and distributions of shelter kits.
