Bureau of Transportation Statistics Upcoming Releases

July 30 through Aug. 10

 

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics will release the following data sets in the next two weeks:

 

  • Airline Fuel Cost and Consumption, June 2018
Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018 - 11:00am ET
BTS Airline Fuel Cost and Consumption database to be updated with June data. Last month, US airlines May fuel cost was $2.19 per gallon, up 11 cents from April ($2.08) and up 59 cents from May 2017 ($1.60). Industry summary of airline fuel consumption, total fuel cost and price paid per gallon are available on the database. Individual airline numbers through March are available on the BTS website.

TSI May

 

  • Transportation Services Index (TSI), June 2018
Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018 - 11:30am ET
The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in for-hire freight shipments by mode of transportation. The Passenger TSI measures the month-to-month changes in travel that involves the services of the for-hire passenger transportation sector. In the previous release for May, BTS reported that the Freight TSI rose 1.0 percent from April to reaching an all-time high. The index was up 6.4 percent from May 2017.

 

  • Airline Industry Full-Time/Part-Time Employment, June 2018
Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018 - 11:00am ET
BTS Airline Employment database to be updated with June data. Last month, U.S. airlines May employment (714,474 total full-time and part-time)) was up 0.4pct from April and up 2.6pct from May 2017. Monthly full-time and part-time employment statistics reported by U.S. airlines that operate at least one aircraft that has more than 60 seats or the capacity to carry a payload of passengers, cargo and fuel weighing more than 18,000 pounds. Includes passenger and cargo airlines.

The Summer 2018 update to the National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD) was released today with 13 revised datasets.

NTS consists of more than 260 tables of national data of which 82 were updated.

  • Air Travel Consumer Report: May 2018 Numbers

In May 2018, the reporting carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 79.4 percent, up from the 79.1 percent on-time rate in May 2017, but down from the 81.3 percent mark in April 2018.

  • North American Freight Data, May 2018
Wednesday, July 25, 2018
BTS reported that truck was the most used mode for shipping freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in May 2018:
  • Most-used mode: Truck moved $67.9 billion of freight, up 8.9 percent compared to May 2017 
  • Second mode: Rail moved $15.3 billion of freight, up 0.7 percent compared to May 2017
