Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) was an American writer, poet, illustrator, and set designer. He’s probably best known for his ominous and macabre illustrations in Edwardian and Victorian settings which have appeared in his own work, as well as in books, magazines, and films of others. He received a Tony Award for costume design in the 1977 Broadway revival of Dracula and his animations have greeted viewers of PBS’ Mystery! series for more than 40 years. Gorey illustrated at least 500 books for other authors and wrote 116 books of his own. The Library of Congress is fortunate to hold two major Gorey collections: the Glen Emil and the Edward Bradford Gorey collections that include monographs, periodicals, original artwork, posters, and realia. This post will provide a short biography of Edward Gorey and highlight selections from our collections.
