Fentanyl overdoses, deaths are a daily battle for L.A.'s homeless population

Fentanyl is fueling a surge in overdoses among unhoused people in Los Angeles, playing out as a daily battle for life and death in encampments. Many have witnessed an overdose, suffered one themselves or helped save someone's life.

The synthetic opioid is so potent that even a trace amount in a pipe or several puffs of secondhand smoke can make someone pass out or become extremely ill, especially if they've never taken the drug before.
