Happy birthday to Walt Whitman

We're kicking off a month-long challenge to celebrate Walt Whitman's birthday! Each week in the month of June we'll highlight a new area of the Whitman campaign for you to focus your transcribing and reviewing attention. In case you missed it, we recently launched a whole new batch of Whitman material from the Thomas B. Harned collection. You'll find all kinds of fascinating things in the new project, including more of Whitman's handwritten notebooks containing notes on his Civil War hospital visits and drafts of his poems. Read historian Barbara Bair's latest blog post about the Harned transcription campaign to learn more about what's in this set of Whitman materials.

We're focusing on Whitman's notebooks and diaries for the first two weeks of the challenge. Whitman's notes contain his drafts and reworkings of poems, observations of daily life, addresses and contact information for friends, and lots of miscellaneous notes. Here's a list to help you get started:

Whitman postcards

Are you participating in our June challenge by transcribing or reviewing pages in the Walt Whitman campaign? Would you like a Whitman-By the People postcard? New dataset: General George S. Patton war diaries

We recently published a new transcription dataset from the General George S. Patton diaries campaign! Library of Congress staff transcribed Patton's diaries as a telework project during the pandemic. The set includes a spreadsheet with all of the transcriptions and a file called a README that describes the data, provides some background information on General Patton, and explains how the transcriptions were produced.

Warmly,

Abby & the By the People team
