California extends indoor mask mandate as Omicron surges

California will extend its mask mandate for indoor public spaces for another month as an unprecedented wave of coronavirus infections spawned by the Omicron variant continues to wash over the state.

A statewide order was reinstituted in mid-December, and was originally set to be reevaluated Jan. 15. But given the sharp recent rise in infections and hospitalizations, the order will be in place through at least Feb. 15, said Dr. Mark Ghaly, California's health and human services secretary.
