Ahead of Omicron surge, December hiring is a disappointing end to 2021

Employers across the country added just 199,000 people to their payrolls in December, closing out a pandemic-marred year in which the U.S. economy nonetheless gained some 6.5 million jobs and saw a dramatic drop in unemployment, the government reported Friday.

The nation's jobless rate stood at 3.9% in the final month of 2021, sharply lower than November's 4.2%. That's down from 6.3% at the start of the year and not far off the decades-low level before COVID-19 hit.
