White House Announces Africa Business
Initiative; Focus on Energy, Health

The Biden administration on Tuesday announced a new push to expand business ties between U.S. companies and Africa, with a focus on clean energy, health, agribusiness and transportation infrastructure on the continent.

U.S. industry executives welcomed the interest, but said dollar flows will lag until the administration wraps up its lengthy review of Trump administration trade measures and sets a clear policy on investments in liquefied natural gas.

Dana Banks, senior director for Africa at the White House National Security Council, told a conference the administration planned to "re-imagine" and revive Prosper Africa, an initiative launched by former-President Donald Trump in 2018, as the "centerpiece of U.S. economic and commercial engagement with Africa." MCC's Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Alexia Latortue, announced Tuesday the agency will sign more than $1 billion of new economic growth programs in Africa by the end of 2022, underscoring the agency's work to support the tremendous infrastructure needs of countries through grant financing and policy reforms.
The United States recently announced the Build Back Better World Initiative (B3W) to help meet this challenge and address infrastructure needs in the developing world. B3W will be led by the G7 in partnership with multilateral institutions and private sector companies, and will focus on catalyzing "hundreds of billions" in investments in climate, health, digital technology, and gender equality. Through the $308 million Ghana Compact, MCC is investing in programs that will create opportunities for women to pursue and achieve their professional aspirations in male-dominated fields. One way is by creating platforms for women employed in the power sector to voice their concerns, exchange ideas and solutions, and network.
...thousands of rural Guatemalans — as well as Salvadorans and Hondurans in agrarian areas — increasingly are leaving their communities. These days, migration — including the record number of unaccompanied children — is on the rise in rural areas, as an increasing portion of the country's land and population faces the fallout from climate change. Côte d'Ivoire has secured $34 million from the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), which is part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG). The funds will go towards building a 44MW hydroelectricity generation plant – an important strategic economic asset for Côte d'Ivoire. (ESI Africa)
A bipartisan bill from Sen. John Boozman [R-AR], Sen. James Inhofe [R-OK], Sen. Cory Booker [D-NJ] and Sen. Benjamin Cardin [D-MD]. The purpose of this bill is to increase U.S. exports to Africa by 200%, which would create jobs in the U.S. while developing more ties between Africa and the global economy. (Borgen Magazine)
MCC announced on July 26 the appointment of Alicia Phillips Mandaville as Vice President for the Department of Policy and Evaluation (DPE). Phillips Mandaville returns to lead the DPE team that oversees MCC's annual country selection and eligibility process; the rigorous analysis, monitoring, and evaluation of grant programs; and MCC's learning and results agenda.

Engaging the Private Sector for Innovative Global Development

Nine out of ten jobs in the developing world are now in the private sector, and more than 85 percent of US engagement with developing countries comes through the private sector. Going forward, multi-stakeholder partnerships offer great potential to encourage global development, reduce poverty and inequality, and bring prosperity to millions. 2021 WiSci Morocco Camp, August 9-20
The UN Foundation's Girl Up is hosting the 2021 WiSci (Women in Science) Morocco Camp with support from MCC, MCA-Morocco and MCA-Côte d'Ivoire. Campers will participate virtually from Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire, and the U.S. in informative discussions, interactive science, technology, engineering, arts and design, and mathematics (STEAM) workshops, and leadership-training activities. Since 2015, WiSci Camps have been made possible thanks to private-public partnerships between Girl Up and the U.S. Department of State's Office of Global Partnerships, Intel, Caterpillar MCC, and many others who are committed to closing the gender gap in STEAM.
