Hi there,
Reddit -- a social platform where users can discuss a variety of topics like gaming, technology, or restaurants -- now has a whopping 330 million monthly active users.
Although Reddit's growing user base makes it seem opportunistic to marketers, publications like Digiday still refer to it as one of the "trickiest platforms to crack."
Reddit enables users to create online communities and discussion boards about specific topics. The idea is to bring a variety of online strangers together to chat about things they have in common. Here are two key features that make Reddit feeds and algorithms even more community-oriented:
Subreddits: These are giant online communities that hold smaller discussion threads within them. A subreddit centers around an overarching topic, like Xbox, while threads within it discuss subtopics -- like specific Xbox games.
Upvotes/Downvotes: Threads and comments within a thread move up and down on feeds or subreddits based on upvotes and downvotes from users. Upvotes are like Facebook Likes which signal Reddit algorithms to move a thread or comment up. Downvotes move less engaging content down.
While Reddit's features might boost user experience, here's why they make the platform tricky for marketers:
Redditors prefer to see tips, life-hacks, product criticisms, and other information from humans, rather than branded content or ads.
If a post isn't valuable, Redditors will downvote it. If marketing content isn't interesting, it could be instantly buried below other threads.
Reddit's platform makes it easier to find and discover discussions rather than users. You can't easily search for legitimate company profiles or official business pages. You also can't verify a business profile. This means "anyone can be anyone" on Reddit.
It takes a creative marketer to succeed on Reddit. But it isn't unheard of. Here are a few strategies that successful marketers have used.
Paid Post Promotion: When you use Reddit's advertising platform to launch posts that are promoted and appear naturally in user feeds.
Ask Me Anything Events: A brand has a thought leader associated with them start a discussion thread and then allows users to ask them anything.
Branded Subreddits: When a brand makes a subreddit for their own company where Redditors can begin threads to ask product questions or discuss how to use a product.
Posting Content in Related Subreddits: When a brand posts content in subreddits that are already related to its product or industry to gain audiences from those discussion audiences.
