Goats Found with Fractured Limbs, Maggot-Filled Wound in Heifer International’s Service Area

Breaking News

Dear Aaaaaaa,

While Heifer International wants people to believe that the goats and other animals it sells online as gifts to marginalized communities become treasured members of human families, the reality is that they and their offspring may be sentenced to neglect, outright abuse, and a painful death in a likely unregulated slaughterhouse.

A PETA and Sentient investigation into areas where Heifer International's animal-donation program operates found that goats were suffering from conditions including an infected udder, a fractured limb, and a maggot-filled wound—none of which were properly treated. Several goats were also kept tied up with ropes so short that they could hardly move. Some villagers forced sticks into baby goats' mouths to prevent them from drinking their mothers' milk, which is taken away for human consumption, and male goats were pinned down and castrated without the use of anesthesia.

In Rajasthan, India, Heifer International is an advocate of the meat industry. Villagers, including those with goats from Heifer International, work through a farmer producer organization to sell their animals for slaughter. The male offspring of the goats provided by the program may be sold by the recipients and sent to slaughter. This is the main goal of the program: Goats are sold for meat and end up on the killing floor.

Please ask Heifer International President and CEO Pierre Ferrari to stop its animal donation program and instead focus the organization's efforts on its humane community empowerment initiatives that don't involve animals.

Take Action

If we want things to change, we have to speak out. Thank you for taking action.

Sincerely,
