Thursday, December 6, 2018 - 11:00am ET BTS Airline Fuel Cost and Consumption database to be updated with October data. Last month, US airlines September fuel cost was $2.24 per gallon, up 4 cents cent from August ($2.20) and up 46 cents from September 2017 ($1.78). Industry summary of airline fuel consumption, total fuel cost and price paid per gallon are available on the database. Individual airline numbers through June are available on the BTS website.
Thursday, December 6, 2018 - 11:00am ETThe Commodity Flow Survey (CFS), is conducted every five years as a partnership between BTS and the U.S. Census Bureau and is a component of the Economic Census. The 2017 CFS is the sixth survey in the program that began in 1993. The CFS is a shipper survey of approximately 100,000 establishments from the industries of mining, manufacturing, wholesale trade, auxiliaries (i.e. warehouses and distribution centers), and select retail and service trade industries that ship commodities. The CFS provides a comprehensive multimodal picture of national freight flows and represents the only publicly available source of data for the highway mode. Results from the CFS are used to analyze trends in the movement of goods, mapping spatial patterns of commodity and vehicle flows, forecasting demands for the movement of goods, and for guiding management and investment decisions on transportation infrastructure.
Friday, December 7, 2018 - 11:00am ET BTS Airline Employment database to be updated with October data. Last month, U.S. airlines September employment (722,880 total full-time and part-time)) was up 0.5 percent from August and up 3.3 percent from September 2017. Monthly full-time and part-time employment statistics reported by U.S. airlines that operate at least one aircraft that has more than 60 seats or the capacity to carry a payload of passengers, cargo and fuel weighing more than 18,000 pounds. Includes passenger and cargo airlines.
Monday, December 10, 2018 - 11:00am ET The release summarizes net profit, operating profit, operating revenue and operating expenses for the U.S. scheduled service passenger airlines for systemwide, domestic and international operations. The BTS second quarter release said that U.S. scheduled passenger airlines reported an after-tax net profit of $3.4 billion in the second quarter of 2018, up from $1.7 billion in the first quarter of 2018 and down from $4.7 billion in the second quarter of 2017. Additional financial numbers for all airlines will be available on the BTS financial databases. 
Wednesday, December 12, 2018 - 11:30am ET The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in for-hire freight shipments by mode of transportation. The Passenger TSI measures the month-to-month changes in travel that involves the services of the for-hire passenger transportation sector. In the previous release for September, BTS reported that the Freight TSI fell 0.3 percent in September from August, falling after a one-month Increase. The September Freight TSI was the fifth highest index level on record but was 0.9 percent below the all-time high level in June 2018. 
Thursday, December 13, 2018 - 11:00am ET BTS estimates air traffic data for October and November based on reported data through September. Estimates are for U.S. airlines monthly passengers, revenue passenger-miles, available seat-miles and load factor for systemwide, domestic and international. Numbers are seasonally-adjusted and unadjusted. In the previous release, U.S. airlines were estimated to have carried 75.3 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers in October. The 75.3 million passengers in October were up 0.1 percent from the previous month, up 4.5 percent from the previous year and up 11.0 percent from three years earlier. August unadjusted reported systemwide, domestic and international enplanements all reached all-time highs for any August.

Nov. 19 BTS reported that U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 2.7 percent more workers in September 2018 than in September 2017: The second highest monthly full-time equivalent (FTE) employment total (440,460 FTEs) since August 2004 (443,412 FTEs), exceeded only by July 2018 (443,475). The 59th consecutive month that U.S. scheduled passenger airline FTEs exceeded the same month of the previous year. 
Nov. 20 BTS reported that truck was the most used mode for shipping freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in September 2018: Most-used mode: Truck moved $63.3 billion of freight, up 4.2 percent compared to September 2017 Second mode: Rail moved $15.1 billion of freight, up 7.6 percent compared to September 2017 
Nov. 21 The marketing carriers reported an on-time rate of 81.9 percent in September and a cancellation rate of 1.5 percent. The reporting carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 82.2 percent, up from the 75.6 percent on-time rate in August 2018 and down from 83.6 percent in September 2017. Reporting carriers canceled 1.4 percent of their scheduled domestic flights, a lower rate both than 1.9 percent in August 2018 and 3.3 percent in September 2017. 
Nov. 28 released the first two chapters of Transportation Economic Trends 2018, an annual report on transportation and the economy. The report highlights important trends in transportation and the economy. The first two chapters released cover BTS' Transportation Services Index (TSI), a monthly summary of freight and passenger movement, and government transportation spending and revenue. The initial chapters report that rail intermodal grew the fastest since the end of the economic recession among the freight transportation modes included in the Freight TSI while air freight has grown the fastest during the last three years.
