July is National Theft Prevention Month Motor vehicles are the primary mode of transportation for most of us, and often an indispensable part of our lives. But what would happen if your vehicle suddenly disappeared? 765,484 motor vehicles were stolen in 2016, with the cost of stolen vehicles pegged at more than $5.9 billion – that's billion with a "B"! What consumers should know: Passenger cars make up more than 50% of all stolen motor vehicles. 42% of all stolen motor vehicles are never recovered. A motor vehicle is stolen every 41 seconds. Thieves can strip a vehicle for parts in 30 minutes or less.
