The American Folklife Center is delighted to announce the publication of our new book, "Sharing Food, Sharing Culture: Foodways at the American Folklife Center." The 132-page book explores the traditional cultural practices surrounding food through more than 200 items from the center’s collections. Across four chapters, the book examines food and work; the ways people gather to prepare and enjoy food; connections among food, tradition, and the landscape; and creative expressions about food, especially songs. The book was researched, curated, and written by American Folklife Center staff members (and Folklife Today bloggers) Allina Migoni, Meg Nicholas, and Stephen Winick, with contributions from John Fenn. It also includes a foreword by acting Librarian of Congress Robert E. Newlen and contributions from two renowned food writers: an afterword by James Beard Award-winning chef and food writer Michael Twitty, author of “The Cooking Gene,” and an introduction by folklorist Lucy Long, foodways expert and author of “Regional American Food Culture.” Find out more about the book and how to get it in this blog post.
