Arctic exploration has never been a particularly safe endeavor. Whether trying to find a Northwest Passage, reaching the North Pole, or looking for fellow adventurers who disappeared along the way, many explorers perished there or at least had a very unpleasant journey. To understand what went wrong, many of the survivors and the people who interviewed them made maps of their itineraries, which in turn contributed greatly to our understanding of the regions all around the Arctic Circle. One of those areas that I find particularly fascinating is the delta of the Lena River, an area the size of Maryland that hosts abundant Arctic wildlife – including Arctic terns and other migratory birds – and daunting natural conditions.
