Gunman who killed Riverside County deputy should have been jailed on 'three strikes,' sheriff says

The man who fatally shot a Riverside County sheriff's deputy before being killed in a gun battle with law enforcement should have been incarcerated after violating California's "three strikes" law, Sheriff Chad Bianco said.

William Shea McKay, 44, had a lengthy criminal record and was convicted of his third strike last year in a case that involved kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon. "Instead of sentencing him to 25 years to life, which should have happened, the judge lowered his bail, allowing him to be released," Bianco said.
