Bikeshare Ridership Exceeds Pre-Pandemic 2019 High for Fourth Straight Month

View it as a Web page.   Bikeshare Ridership Exceeds Pre-Pandemic 2019 High for Fourth Straight Month Tuesday, August 31, 2021 Ridership on six of the nation's largest docked bikeshare systems increased over 2019 and 2020 during the four months from April through July 2021 according to updated data from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released on its Bikeshare and E-scooters in the U.S. dashboard. As of June 2021, 66 docked bikeshare systems open to the general public operated 7,386 docking stations in the U.S. That is a nearly a 40% decline from the pre-pandemic high of 103 docked systems in 2019 but a 9% increase over 2019's 6,755 docking stations.  After the initial COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020, ridership declined on the nation's six largest docked bikeshare systems but began increasing again in May 2020 and rose above 2019 levels in November. Following November, ridership receded below 2019 levels during the winter before beginning to rise in March 2021. Ridership has exceeded 2019 levels in each of the complete months since April of this year.     Docked bikeshare stations are part of the BTS Intermodal Passenger Connectivity Database (IPCD), a nationwide database of passenger transportation facilities and docked bikeshare stations, with data on the availability of connections to: intercity, commuter, and transit rail; scheduled air service; intercity and transit bus; intercity and transit ferry services; and bikeshare. According to data reported by BTS, as of June 2021, 63% of all bikeshare docking stations are within one block of another public passenger transportation mode, and an additional 17% are within two blocks.
