Statement from the Maritime Administrator

I learned today that my alma mater – Kings Point - has once again received full accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. As I've stated since my confirmation hearing, the success of the Academy at every level is one of my highest priorities, and this announcement is confirmation that the US Merchant Marine Academy is getting back on course for providing a world-class educational experience to our future leaders. My thanks to Rear ‎Admiral Helis and his team for working to resolve the issues that were identified by the commission.

Mark H. Buzby

Journeys: Understanding Self & Building Community

Journeys: Understanding Self & Building Community is an annual LGBTQ Resource Center Retreat made possible by the Tagliabue Initiative and the generous contributions of individual alumni donors.

The purpose of this retreat is to provide a space for members of the LGBTQ community and its allies at Georgetown to gather in order to share personal stories, to reflect on individual and community formation, and enter into thoughtful dialogue regarding the nature of the many communities that comprise the broader LGBTQA community at Georgetown. This unique opportunity to come together in a setting outside of campus provides students the freedom and context to be in a space where they can be fully themselves, without fear or judgment. It is our hope that through this engaged experience, students will gain a deeper understanding of their formation of self and how they can actively foster community, both at Georgetown and beyond. It is our belief that fostering formation leads to transformation.

By sharing openly with each other and being vulnerable together, students can come to know their peers more fully. Through reflection, both individual and shared, on their lived experiences, students can develop an authentic appreciation and respect for all that we are, and that we are NOT. Small group and large group discussions will help lay foundations to build solidarity both within and between our varied communities. It is our goal that this will allow for what Fr. Kolvenbach calls "the formation of whole persons of solidarity.

A Letter from Campus Ministry: The Effects of White Noise

Every week, the chaplains-in-residence email letters of encouragement, reflection, and community to their residents. In one of her letters, Stephanie Wong, one of the chaplains-in-residence of LXR and Nevils, shared the effects of white noise on her life. Drawing inspiration from her baby's white noise machine, Stephanie reflects on how to find peace amidst the stressful white noise of college life. Read her full letter on the Campus Ministry blog here (I've uploaded it as a Word doc for you as well).

A native of California, Stephanie Wong holds an M.Div. from Yale Divinity School and is currently a doctoral candidate in Georgetown's Theology Department. She has pastoral experience serving as a Catholic middle school chaplain, a hospital chaplain, and as an intern at the St. Thomas More Catholic Chapel & Center at Yale. Stephanie lives in LXR Hall with her husband and son.

Tobacco-Free @ Georgetown University

Over the last several years, Georgetown University has been on a journey to become a smoke-free/tobacco-free campus. The first phase of implementing a smoke-free and tobacco-free campus is to more closely conform with DC law as it relates to signage and designated smoking locations across the campus.

BTS Statistics Release: September 2017 Passenger Airline Employment Data

Correction: Consecutive months have been revised from 46 to 47.

U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 3.3 percent more workers in September 2017 than in September 2016, reaching 428,343 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported today. September was the 47th consecutive month that U.S. scheduled passenger airline FTEs exceeded the same month of the previous year (Tables 1, 2, 3).

 Fig1

Month-to-month, the number of FTEs was unchanged from August to September (Table 1A). Scheduled passenger airline categories include network, low-cost, regional and other airlines. Historical employment data can be found on the BTS web site.

The four network airlines that collectively employ 64.9 percent of the scheduled passenger airline FTEs reported 2.1 percent more FTEs in September 2017 than in September 2016 (Tables 7, 8, 9). Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines increased FTEs from September 2016. Month-to-month, the number of network airline FTEs fell 0.1 percent from August to September (Table 1A).

The network airlines employed 8.9 percent more FTEs in September 2017 than in September 2013 (Tables 8, 9). Network airlines operate a significant portion of their flights using at least one hub where connections are made for flights to down-line destinations or spoke cities.

The six low-cost carriers reported 6.8 percent more FTEs in September 2017 than in September 2016 (Tables 10, 11, 12). Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Virgin America and Southwest Airlines increased FTEs from September 2016 (Table 12). Month-to-month, the number of low-cost airline FTEs rose 0.4 percent from August to September (Table 1A). The six low-cost airlines employed 29.5 percent more FTEs in September 2017 than in September 2013 (Tables 11, 12). Low-cost airlines operate under a low-cost business model, with infrastructure and aircraft operating costs below the overall industry average.

The 11 regional carriers reported 4.3 percent more FTEs in September 2017 than in September 2016 (Tables 13, 14, 15). Seven regional airlines –PSA Airlines, SkyWest Airlines, Envoy Air, Republic Airlines, Horizon Air, Endeavor Air, and GoJet increased FTEs from September 2016. ExpressJet Airlines, Compass Airlines, Air Wisconsin and Mesa Airlines, reported a decrease (Table 15). Month-to-month, the number of regional airline FTEs rose 0.5 percent from August to September (Table 1A). The 11 regional carriers reporting in September 2017 employed 6.7 percent more FTEs in September 2017 than the 15 carriers reporting in September 2013 (Tables 14, 15). Regional carriers typically provide service from small cities, using primarily regional jets to support the network carriers' hub and spoke systems.

Carrier Groups: The four network airlines employed 64.9 percent of the 428,343 FTEs employed by all scheduled passenger airlines in September, the six low-cost carriers employed 21.0 percent and the 11 regional carriers employed 12.3 percent (Table 4). In comparison, in September 2006, network airlines employed 65.4 percent of the FTEs, six low-cost carriers employed 17.6 percent and regional carriers employed 14.8 percent (Table 5).

Top Employers by Group: American employed the most FTEs (100,732) in September among the network airlines, Southwest employed the most FTEs (55,671) among low-cost airlines, and Envoy employed the most FTEs (12,025) among regional airlines. The three airlines with the most FTEs in September – American, United and Delta – employed 61.9 percent of the month's total passenger airline FTEs (Tables 3, 6).

Reporting Notes

Airlines that operate at least one aircraft that has more than 60 seats or the capacity to carry a payload of passengers, cargo and fuel weighing more than 18,000 pounds must report monthly employment statistics.

The "Other Carrier" category generally reflects those airlines that operate within specific niche markets such as the Hawaiian Islands served by Hawaiian Airlines and Island Air Hawaii.

Data are compiled from monthly reports filed with BTS by commercial air carriers as of Nov. 8. Additional airline employment data and previous press releases can be found on the BTS website.  BTS has scheduled release of October 2017 passenger airline employment data for Dec. 15.
