You are subscribed to Patron Services from the Library of Congress. Belarusian Literary Voices from AbroadDate/Time: Thursday, May 16, 2024, 12-2pm EDT Join us for an afternoon of fiction and poetry exploring memory, language, hybrid identities, empire, and boundaries with Tatsiana Zamirovskaya, Valzhyna Mort, and Julia Cimafiejeva – three established Belarusian writers living in exile from this country bordering Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. Literature in exile offers a particularly effective space for enabling empathy and documenting present history as it unfolds. Belarusian literature in exile is especially rich in the present moment because of its emphasis on language, identity, and memory during a historical moment in which Belarus, a former Soviet Republic, neighbor to Russia and Ukraine, governed by a professed authoritarian, who is recognized internationally for human rights abuses. The authors will share their creative expression and experience at this event an English-speaking audience. Tatsiana Zamirovskaya moved from Minsk to Brooklyn in 2015. She writes metaphysical and socially charged fiction about memory, ghosts, hybrid identities and borders between empires and languages. Valzhyna Mort is a poet and translator who writes in English and Belarusian. She is the author of three poetry collections. The New York Times calls her most recent book, Music for the Dead and Resurrected (FSG, 2020), one of the best poetry books of 2020. Julia Cimafiejeva is a Belarusian poet and translator from English and other languages. She is one of the founders and editors of the online magazine of translated literature PrajdziSviet ('Pass the World') and a member of the Belarusian PEN Center and of the Union of Belarusian Authors.
