U.S. college student fears triggered by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have skyrocketed as escalating campus tensions and protests have led to physical and verbal assaults, doxxing and threats to academic and professional careers. A national study has for the first time documented in detail the extent of those fears reported by 3 million students.
The study led by the University of Chicago found that 58% of students who identified as Jewish and 52% of those who said they were Muslim have feared for their safety since Hamas militants' Oct. 7 attack on Israel. Another 16% of neither background also expressed fears. The violence this week at UCLA highlighted those fears when pro-Israel counterprotesters attacked a pro-Palestinian encampment, tearing down barriers, assaulting campers and screaming epithets.
"I never felt more scared in my life," one female student said. "I felt my life was in danger."
