MCC's Development Report - September 2023

Celebrating Partnerships and Advancing the Global Goals

On September 18, during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) co-hosted an action-oriented reception with the United Nations Foundation (UNF) to discuss the crucial role of country-led partnerships in achieving the UN Global Goals. Speakers included (pictured left to right) Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta, MCC CEO Alice Albright, United States Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resource Richard R. Verma, UNF Senior Vice President Peter Yeo, (not pictured) Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina J. Mohammed, and Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera.

This event kicked off MCC's campaign to recognize 20 years of impact. Learn more about MCC's efforts to support partner countries in advancing toward the Global Goals.
In New York during UNGA, MCC CEO Albright and senior leadership demonstrated their strong commitment to global progress. Meetings were held with partner country delegations from around the world and participation in key events discussed how MCC supports governments in delivering for their people. By the end of the week, MCC met with delegations from Kosovo, Kiribati, and Timor-Leste and participated as panelists at Devex, Kyle House, USGLC, and the Atlantic Council events.

On September 19, MCC CEO Albright and President of Kenya William S. Ruto signed a $60 million threshold program agreement to improve accessible and safer transportation options for Kenyans.

On September 21, MCC CEO Alice Albright joined President Filipe Nyusi, Minister of Economy and Finance Ernesto Max Tonela, House of Foreign Affairs (HFAC) Africa Subcommittee Chair Representative John James, HFAC Africa Ranking Member Representative Sara Jacobs, and Senator Ben Cardin for the signing of the $537 million Mozambique Connectivity and Coastal Resilience Compact.

On September 25, during the U.S.-Pacific Islands Summit, MCC CEO Albright and the President of Kiribati Taneti Maamau signed the $29.1 million MCC-Kiribati Threshold Program to promote inclusive employment opportunities, improve workers' rights, and invest in youth employment and training opportunities.
In today's world, where technology and innovation are advancing rapidly, it is crucial to provide equal access to educational opportunities and resources in the fields of science and technology to everyone. MCC and the Government of Côte d'Ivoire are working together to unlock the potential of young girls like Marie, a ninth-grader, by offering them week-long camps to teach them practical skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Find out how these camps are equipping girls with the right skills to succeed in the future.
As we reach the halfway point of the 2030 Agenda, progress is severely off-track. During the 78th session of UNGA, MCC and the United Nations Foundation co-hosted a reception to underscore the importance of partnerships in driving meaningful progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
