House Democrats have tapped Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York to lead them in the next Congress, succeeding Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and elected Rep. Pete Aguilar of Redlands as Democratic Caucus chair.
The selection of Jeffries as minority leader will make him the highest-ranking African American member of the House and the first Black lawmaker to lead either party in the chamber.
Aguilar will be the third Latino to chair the Democratic Caucus. In that post, Aguilar will lead caucus meetings and hold weekly news conferences.
