Yvonne Bezerra de Mello started a sidewalk school for kids living on the streets in Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s. Her work in the Brazilian city grew over the years into Projeto Uerê, a multi-faceted program that helps traumatized children learn and grow. This year it won the Library's top prize in the 2026 Literacy Awards, the $150,000 David M. Rubenstein Prize. Twenty other programs around the world were recognized in the annual awards, announced recently by Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen.
