Correspondence and archival materials located in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division’s Ann Cottrell Free papers shed light on the close collaboration and friendship between Free and Christine Stevens, founder of the Animal Welfare Institute. Through investigative journalism and reasoned advocacy, these pioneering women were instrumental in the passage of laws that continue to protect animals today, including the Animal Welfare Act.
