Los Angeles, Portland and other progressive cities are still powered by faraway coal plants. Climate Columnist Sammy Roth and a team of Los Angeles Times journalists went to Montana to get answers about what the future holds for the West's coal towns.

The big questions: What do West Coast cities owe those rural towns for producing our power and living with our air and water pollution?
