L.A. will switch to independent redistricting if voters approve in 2024

Los Angeles voters will decide in November 2024 whether City Council districts will be redrawn every 10 years by an independent commission, replacing the current system, which is overseen by council members.

The council unanimously approved placing the proposed City Charter amendment on the ballot today, just over a year after the release of an incendiary secret recording on which council members spoke in sometimes racist language about the upcoming redistricting process.
