Transcribe 1865 scroll signed by Black South Carolinians petitioning for equal rights
Months after the Civil War ended in 1865, over 3,000 African American residents of South Carolina submitted a petition of fifty-four feet in length urging the U.S. Congress to ensure that voting rights be secured to them in the new South Carolina state constitution. These South Carolinians were among many African Americans who submitted petitions to government officials to advocate for equal treatment under the law in the wake of emancipation. Who were the African American South Carolinians who signed this petition? How did this petition connect them?
Help transcribe the roughly 3,740 petition signatures to make the names of individual petitioners more discoverable and to encourage further research on this remarkable but largely unknown document. This small campaign is going quickly - we need help with review and especially ensuring that the names are properly formatted. Please don't preserve the two-column layout of the original, but transcribe the names in the order you would read them in a single list.

Join By the People and Library colleagues on Wednesday, April 5 from 3-4pm EDT for a webinar to learn more the transcription campaign for the South Carolina equal rights petition. Library subject specialists Michelle Krowl and Ahmed Johnson will explore the historical context of the document and provide resources for doing genealogical research related to the thousands of names on the petition. By the People Community Managers will also orient attendees to transcribing the Library's collections.
