After watching her struggle to get in and out of the rickety wooden box that served as her only escape from the bone-chilling Arctic wind, I had to do something to help her. I offered to take her to a veterinarian for care—but the mushers who owned the kennel refused, evidently fearing that anyone who saw her would conclude that they were “being real hard” on dogs like Birch. So instead, they just left her chained outside to drag herself through the ice and snow. After meeting Birch, Snickers, and other neglected, miserable dogs exploited by the dogsledding industry, I’m more determined than ever to end the cruelty that they endure. Birch sustained her debilitating injury before she was old enough to race—but even an Iditarod win wasn’t enough to make Snickers’ life any less miserable. Year after year, Snickers was forced to haul a loaded sled through about 1,000 miles of ice and snow. When not racing, she was still left outdoors around the clock at that same kennel, alongside dozens of dogs whom musher John Baker condemned to a life of loneliness and neglect. When I met Snickers, she walked with a painful limp from chronic arthritis. Until I built a doghouse for her, she had no shelter from the howling wind and subzero temperatures. And without our help, she and other victims of the dogsledding industry will likely never receive the care and comfort that they deserve. Major companies—including Alaska Airlines, Coca-Cola, Jack Daniel’s, State Farm, and Wells Fargo—have already stopped sponsoring the Iditarod after hearing from PETA and thousands of our supporters. Last spring, after a deluge of online actions, demonstrations in which we smashed donated cars with sledgehammers, “dog graveyard” protests, and more, Chrysler confirmed that its Anchorage dealership was cutting ties with the death race as well. Now, PETA’s ramping up the campaign even more: We’ve run an ad blitz in Anchorage revealing Snickers’ suffering and blasting ExxonMobil’s ties to the Iditarod. Gas stations across the U.S. and Canada have been plastered with “ExxonEvil” stickers, and our supporters are calling and e-mailing the company in hopes of warming its cold heart.
