WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Unaccompanied refugee children in Greece need shelter and protection. According to a new report from UNICEF, the number of unaccompanied and separated refugee and migrant children who live in dangerous and overcrowded reception centres on the Greek islands now exceeds 1,100 – the largest number since the beginning of 2016. On Monday, UNHCR called on Greece's government to urgently transfer refugee and migrant youths to safe areas after a deadly fight at Moria camp on the island of Lesvos. The safe area at Moria hosts nearly 70 unaccompanied children, but more than 500 other boys and girls are staying in various parts of the overcrowded facility without a guardian and may be exposed to exploitation and abuse. “Moria is not the place for children who are alone and have faced profound trauma from events at home and the hardship of their flight,” said UNHCR representative in Greece Philippe Leclerc in a statement. “They need special care in designated shelters.”
Venezuelans stranded at Ecuador's border as visa rule comes into effect. Scores of Venezuelan refugees and migrants are stranded at Ecuador’s border after a new rule that bars them from entering the country without a visa came into effect from Monday. According to Deutsche Welle, many are camped out on the Colombian side of the border, assisted by the Red Cross and UNHCR. Over 11,000 Venezuelans are estimated to have left Colombia on the Rumichaca border bridge towards Ecuador over the weekend , seeking to enter the country before new visa requirements went into force. Colombian media reported that hundreds who did not make it in time blocked traffic on the bridge in protest. In an interview with news agency dpa, Yukiko Iriyama, UNHCR’s deputy representative in Colombia, called for countries to share responsibility for taking in refugees. "People are arriving in more vulnerable states and conditions, requiring more humanitarian support," Iriyama said. "The magnitude of the problem is no longer regional, it is becoming global. We are appealing for wider international responsibility-sharing.”
