Dear Georgetown Community,

The Center for Student Engagement will be hosting our annual Saxa Awards on May 1, 2018 in the HFSC Social Room at 1 PM. Come celebrate outstanding student leaders and extraordinary student-run programs!

We are excited to give recognition to students and student organizations at Georgetown University. Come celebrate with us!

Sincerely,
The Center for Student Engagement
Counseling and Psychiatric Service (CAPS) is offering two new workshops this spring:

Anxiety Toolbox is a 3-part series that focuses on helping you understand anxiety symptoms and build skills to manage these symptoms. The three sessions are divided into content that builds upon itself. The sessions include modules dedicated to:
  1. Understanding anxiety,
  2. Introducing a method for slowing down and disentangling the experience of anxiety, and
  3. Developing alternative responses to anxiety. By the end of the workshop, you will have your own individualized plan for managing anxiety.

Seeking Serenity is informed by dialectical behavior therapy and is designed for students who experience overwhelming emotions that feel difficult to manage. The three sessions are divided into content that builds upon itself. The sessions include modules dedicated to:
  1. Distress tolerance
  2. Emotion regulation, and
  3. Mindfulness. By the end of the workshop, you will have strategies for better managing overwhelming emotions.

Each workshop will run in February, again in March, and again in April. Days and times to be determined. Please contact CAPS (202-687-6985) to enroll.
In an effort to ensure that the Academic Resource Center is reaching ALL of our students, we have expanded our academic resources to include a new academic webinar series!
  • Don't have the time to make it to an ARC workshop, but still want to make sure you are staying on track with your academics?
  • Are you looking for new strategies to study effectively?
  • Need answers to your academic questions?
Each webinar will highlight a different academic theme and allow students to participate in a Q&A session to address any of their academic questions.

No Internship (Yet)? No Problem!

As classes come to an end and with study days and finals looming, it's a busy – and stressful – time of year for Georgetown students.  An internship, or lack thereof, shouldn't be an added stressor.  There are still many opportunities out there, and students seeking internships, paid or unpaid, needn't despair!  The following three R's can help them get to the finish line.
  • Review Opportunities on Internship/Job Boards.  As of this writing, there are currently 2,026 internships listed in Handshake, Georgetown's online career-service platform.  The iNET Internship Network, accessed via Cawley Career Education Center, is an internship board limited to eight consortium schools, including Georgetown.  Meanwhile, the Vault Career Insider, also accessed via Cawley, houses thousands of internship and job opportunities and is an amazing source of industry insider information.   Finally, students shouldn't neglect the many free job boards found online including Indeed, Idealist, and LinkedIn.
  • Refine Personal Brand.  Speaking of LinkedIn.  Your brand is the story your resume tells, your cover letters tells, your online presence tells.  Are they all conveying the same message?  Do they align with industry needs and what the job description outlines?  A solid resume, cover letter, and an intentional online presence is essential in the application process.   Students can come into the Cawley Career Education Center for drop-ins between 1pm and 3pm for help with this process.  We also have a number of resources online for the busy student.  Check out our sections on resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn!
  • Reach Out to Alumni.  Networking is often a daunting prospect for students.  But one of the best ways to learn about industries (and find potential internships) is through our strong alumni community.  One of the first places to look is Hoya Gateway.  Hoya Gateway "seeks to connect Georgetown students and alumni for one on one career related conversations to prepare students to explore and reach their career goals and aspirations."  Meanwhile, Georgetown's university page on LinkedIn provides access to over "127,092+" alumni career insights.  It's easy to research alumni according to major, employer, industry, geographic location, and skill.  Another resource is the Alumni Career Network which "puts the power of the Georgetown community at your fingertips." Lastly, the Georgetown University's Alumni Directory is an amazing resource for graduating seniors.   For help composing a letter of introduction, students can check out sample requests on the networking section of our website.
There are three more "R's" in keeping with the Jesuit value of cura personalis that we, at Cawley, would like to emphasize as students head into summer: relax, refresh, and reflect.  Students should be proud of their hard work and accomplishments and allow themselves to relax and enjoy the peace of summer.  In that space, students will be better able to reflect on their academic and experiential goals and meet the new semester refreshed and ready to set new goals.
