Aaaaaaa, Steering the Waves of Change: A Stellar Display on ‘Boycott SeaWorld’ Day
Read on for your August Action Team News!
Dear Aaaaaaa,
You championed marine animals this “Boycott SeaWorld” Day. Action Team members hosted Blackfish watch parties, wore their “SeaWorld Sucks” T-shirts proudly, and took to the streets with powerful messages on their posters. These effective actions steer the waves of change for animals confined at marine parks.
We’re heartbroken and angry that the lonely orca Lolita has died after spending 53 years trapped inside the world’s smallest orca tank at the Miami Seaquarium. It’s especially sad because plans were underway for her release into a seaside sanctuary off the coast of Washington state. You can help ensure that the same fate doesn’t befall Corky at SeaWorld San Diego, who has been trapped inside tiny tanks for nearly 54 years.
Here’s how you took action against SeaWorld last month:
Alison alerted the public to stay out of SeaWorld and never to buy a ticket to the abusement park. She also called on SeaWorld to retire Corky to a seaside sanctuary.
Ellen and fellow advocates held a banner over the bustling freeway north of SeaWorld San Diego. Hundreds of people saw the message, and many of them honked and waved in support!
Rach encouraged people to watch Blackfish, the groundbreaking film that exposed the capture of orcas in nature and SeaWorld’s horrific confinement of Tilikum.
Bryan and Kurt held a banner at a demo urging SeaWorld to stop breeding dolphins, pointing out that more than 400 of these animals have suffered and died in tiny tanks at SeaWorld abusement parks.
August 26 is World Day for the End of Speciesism, so gather friends and family to watch our “How Bigotry Begins” video and then share it with others. It’s time for humans to stop thinking of other animals as voiceless, passive beings and recognize them for who they are!
Campaign update: In Orlando, Florida, on “Boycott SeaWorld” Day, PETA “dolphins” held a visually captivating memorial for over 400 dolphins who died while confined at SeaWorld parks. They mourned these losses by calling out the names of some of the dolphins and sharing the ages at which these animals died, compelling details about their lives, and their causes of death. The animal advocates encouraged the public to stay out of SeaWorld, where some dolphins are sexually abused and forcibly bred to create generations of animals who suffer and die in tiny tanks.
The Cordish Companies, an international real estate company, posted signs to warn about the deadly danger of leaving dogs and children unattended in parked cars.
The largest owner of shopping malls in the U.S., Simon Property Group, stopped using glue traps.
Connect with other animal advocates and get inspired by joining the PETA Action Team Facebook group. View how others have taken action for animals, and share how you choose to speak up. Everyone is welcome—no matter where you are on your animal rights journey. We want you here, and animals need you here.
