The mysterious life — and questionable claims — of Ohtani's interpreter

His Beatles-like haircut and rapport with Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani made Japanese interpreter Ippei Mizuhara a celebrity in his own right. But following allegations he stole more than $4.5 million to cover gambling debts, key aspects of Mizuhara's biography have proved difficult to confirm or turned out to be false.

Mizuhara did not respond to requests for comment and has claimed Ohtani was aware of the payments. The Times visited the area where Mizuhara lived during his teenage years, spoke with childhood friends and acquaintances and sifted through dozens of pages of records to uncover new details about his past.
